Admissions Policy 2019-20

The MFG Academies Trust has responsibility for admissions to the Academy and plans to offer 221 places (admission number) at age 11 in September 2019.  To apply for a place at The Mirfield Free Grammar (the ‘Academy’), an applicant must complete the Secondary Common Application Form (SCAF) supplied by their home Local Authority and return it as instructed by the Local Authority.  It is very important that the form is returned by the closing date because forms received after this date will be treated as “late”.  Late applications are not dealt with until all those received on time have been through the application process.

The Academy will admit children with a Statement of Special Educational Needs where The Mirfield Free Grammar is named on the Statement.

Oversubscription Criteria

If the number of applicants exceeds the number of available places, the following priorities will apply:

  1. a) looked after children and previously looked after children
  2. b) children who have an older brother or sister attending from the same address at the date of admission (the younger sibling rule)
  3. c) children who live in the Academy’s Priority Admission Area
  4. d) children who live outside the Academy’s Priority Admission Area

If the requests for admission in the Oversubscription Criteria b) to d) exceed the admission number, priority will be given up to the admission number to children living nearest the Academy.

Please note:

Notification of Offer of Place

The formal offer of a place will come from the Local Authority which will write to Parents/Carers on 1 March, 2019 allocating a single secondary school to their child.

Waiting List/Appeals

The MFG Academies Trust will use the oversubscription criteria above to rank unsuccessful applicants in a waiting list so that further places may be offered by the Local Authority if they become available. The waiting list will close on the final day of the 2019/20 school year.

Unsuccessful applicants may also contact the Academy to be advised of their right of appeal to an Independent Appeal Panel.

ENTRY AT AGE 16 – Mirfield College

The MFG Academies Trust has responsibility for admissions to Mirfield College and plans to offer 240 places in Year 12 (ie, age 16) in September 2019. To apply for a place at Mirfield College, an applicant must complete an application through UCAS Progress or download an Application Form from the Mirfield College website.

The Academy’s policy is to ensure that all students accepted Mirfield College are placed on appropriate courses where they are likely to succeed. For this reason, all applicants are asked to attend a meeting with members of the Academy’s staff to discuss the most suitable courses of study.

The Mirfield College and application form are on the website

Oversubscription Criteria

Where particular courses are heavily over-subscribed, the places will be offered to those applicants who have the better performance predicted at GCSE for their subject specific requirements.

Unsuccessful applicants may contact Mirfield College to be advised of their right of appeal to an Independent Appeal Panel.

All applications for an in-year admission to The MFG must be made on the Kirklees In-year Common Application Form (ICAF) available from the Academy.  This form is also available to download from the Kirklees Council Website here: In-Year Application Form together with a booklet explaining the process.
