Behaviour for Learning
We expect a very high standard of self-discipline and behaviour from all students at all times. We hope that by encouraging students to adopt a caring and responsible attitude at the Academy they will behave sociably at all other times and in their life too.
The Academy is for Everyone
At The Mirfield Free Grammar, every student is important. This means that whatever ethnicity/gender/sexual orientation, they will have the same opportunities for learning. At the Academy, students will come across other students from different backgrounds. We believe it is important that they respect others who are different from themselves and treat everyone fairly.
Our Code of Conduct is taken from the student section of the Home/Academy Agreement
- attend the Academy regularly and on time;bring all the equipment I need every day;
- wear the Academy uniform and be smart in appearance;
- take great care of my student planner, entering all my home learning and achievements and show it to my parents to be signed each week;
- work hard and do all my home learning and class work as well as I can;
- take care of the Academy and its environment;
- ensure that any part-time work or activities do not interfere with my studies or commitments to the Academy;
- above all, treat others, their work and equipment with respect.
Out of Class
- walk to lessons never, push or barge past anyone;
- for safety, please keep to the left along corridors and on stairways;
- be ready to help, e.g. by holding doors, offering to carry things, etc;
- line up in single file in an orderly manner outside each classroom;
- remain in areas that are designated for students;
- this pattern of behaviour should also apply outside of the Academy.
- arrive on time;
- enter the classroom in a quiet and orderly manner;
- go to your place in the classroom without delay;
- bring all the equipment you need in a suitable bag;
- get out my planner, pens, books etc. at the beginning of every lesson;
- listen carefully;
- follow instructions;
- work hard;
- ask for help when you need it;
- help each other when it is appropriate but don't distract or annoy anyone;
- put your hand up to answer questions;
- be sensible at all times;
- record all your home learning thoroughly in your planner and complete and hand it in on time;
Treat everyone with respect and speak politely to everyone.
- using a low voice as shouting is always rude;
- using language which is neither abusive nor offensive;
- offering to help others;
- being polite to everyone.
Listen to others and expect to be listened to.
- trying to understand other people's points of view;
- not interrupting anybody or being interrupted by others;
- being silent when required;
- not answering back.
Keep the Academy clean and tidy so that it is always a welcoming place, which we can be proud of.
- taking great care of our displays;
- keeping the walls and furniture clean and unmarked;
- putting all litter in bins (even if this means carrying it until you find a bin);
- wearing the correct uniform at all times, removing outdoor coats when in the Academy;
- reporting any damage you see to a member of staff;
- using toilets and showers in an acceptable way.
- eating only in designated areas (chewing gum anywhere on site is forbidden).
The Academy will not tolerate sexist, racist, homophobic or foul language, threatening behaviour, bullying, violence, behaviour that affects the learning of others, disruption of lessons, theft or wilful damage. For such serious incidents the student may be excluded (suspended) for a period.
Behaviour for Learning at The MFG
Behaviour for Learning (BFL) is an integral part of our Academy ethos. It is a behaviour management system which encompasses all aspects of student conduct throughout the Academy; in the classroom, around the Academy, and towards the individual. At its heart is the philosophy that all students and staff in our Academy are important and valued individuals and deserve to be treated with respect. All aspects of a student's behaviour affects their learning and that of those around them. Students learn best when they are happy and confident and the BFL system is in place to help achieve this; no one has the right to interrupt others' learning. There is a significant reward system linked to BFL, but also a range of sanctions to help students learn to avoid antisocial behaviour. A very important aspect of our system is that all sanctions are issued via the BFL system based on a few very simple rules to which we ask the students to adhere.
BFL in the Classroom
BFL rewards and sanctions are linked to behaviour targets. The behaviour targets are displayed in all classrooms. Praise is at the heart of the BFL system and it should be made clear to students that we expect the best of them.
The behaviour targets are:
- To remain silent when the teacher is talking
- To stay on task
- To speak to other students in a pleasant way
- To not touch another student
Some aspects of student behaviour are considered extreme and will result in the student being removed from the lesson 'on call' immediately without warning.
Students should always be reminded at the start of each lesson what this behaviour is and the seriousness of the sanction to punish it. It is crucial, however, that the teacher gives this information to students in a manner that suggests that the students would not behave in that way. Students can be sent straight "on call" for doing the following:
- Not doing as they have been asked first time
- Refusing to start a task
- Speaking to a member of staff inappropriately
C3 - Detentions
The third time a student fails to meet behaviour targets in class they receive a C3. This is a 30 minute detention after school.
BFL around the Academy
An important aspect of BFL is that it extends throughout the Academy.
Any member of our staff, teaching or support can issue a C3 detention to students. There are no warnings for C3 around the Academy. A C3 can be issued for the following:
- Running or shouting in corridors
- Pushing another student
- Eating in a undesignated area
In addition, a C3 will also be given for being more than 5 minutes late to a lesson or tutor time without a note. The class teacher/tutor would normally issue a C3 for this.
Smoking - The MFG is a non-smoking site
Students are not allowed to smoke in the Academy or anywhere on the Academy site. If they are caught smoking on the site, they will have their parents contacted, and spend the rest of the day in the isolation room.
Smoking in toilets or standing next to students smoking in toilets will be more severely punished.
BFL towards the Individual
Behaviour for Learning is part of our Academy ethos because it helps all people, staff and students at The MFG, to feel happier and work harder.
We expect all people who are part of our Academy community to be treated with respect and therefore to treat others with respect. The way we talk to each other, the tone of voice we use and our choice of language is very important in this respect.
We do not expect students to swear in the Academy. Students who swear in class will be sent straight 'on call' and also have to do a one hour detention. If the swearing is 'loud enough to be heard it is loud enough to be punished'.
BFL and uniform
We know that excellent attitudes to learning mean excellent results. All staff and students are encouraged to be very smart at all times, in and out of the Academy.
Shirts must always be tucked in, ties correctly worn. Top buttons must be fastened. Students should take extra care to look smart on the way to and from the Academy, and on public transport as they continue to represent the Academy during those times.
C3 detentions will be issued to any student seen in the Academy with a shirt untucked, a coat on, or with top button undone or tie not worn correctly.
Students' Conduct Outside the Academy Grounds
The Academy has high expectations for student behaviour beyond the Academy grounds. Students are expected to promote a positive image of themselves and the Academy.
In accordance with page 9, point 25 of the DfE guidance document "Behaviour and discipline in schools - Advice for Headteachers and school staff" (Department for Education, February 2014), any student whose behaviour whilst wearing the Academy's uniform outside of the grounds is likely to bring the Academy into disrepute, will face an appropriate sanction.
Students Causing Concern
Poor behaviour, underachievement and truancy, for example, are normally followed by a short period 'on report'. If you are placed 'on report' you will be given a report card by your Achievement Co-ordinator, which you will have to take to every lesson for your teachers to fill in and sign. This acts as a clear check and record of attendance, behaviour and achievement. You will also have to take it home each evening to be read and signed by your parents. Normally a note will be made in your planner, or a phone call made to explain the situation and discuss it with your parents. This may result in them coming in to talk in more detail with your Tutor or Achievement Co-ordinator, and together try to improve the situation.
We hope to encourage high standards of behaviour, self-discipline and performance through positive reward. If you have done something well we hope your teacher will recognise this and reward you with verbal or written praise and praise stamps. When praise stamps are awarded they should be recorded in your planner on the pages provided.
They are given for:
a) service to the Academy/community (e.g. outstanding contribution to
Academy life in and out of the Academy, presenting a good image of the Academy in the local community, extraordinary examples of caring for others or outstanding examples of caring for the Academy environment);
b) outstanding Academy work above that normally expected of the student concerned;
c) targeted improvement (e.g. significant improvement in motivation, attitude, attendance and punctuality);
d) consistent good attitude;
e) consistent good behaviour.
Each year group has its own rewards to encourage the students in that year group to do well and to reward progress and teamwork.
Praiseworthy behaviour will be acknowledged at all times. Good manners, such as the use of "please" and "thank you" and consideration for others will be recognised and encouraged.
Incentives for Achieving no C3 Detentions
We offer incentives to students who avoid a C3 detention for one whole term.
In Year 11 this is a special prize where any Year 11 student achieving this goes on a trip paid for by the Academy. The year group will decide, via the Academy council, where the trip will go to within the parameters of a set budget. In addition there is a 'non-uniform day' for students in Years 7, 8 and 9 who have had no behaviour concerns in one term.
Year 10 are also offered a significant reward for achieving no C3s each term. This may be a smaller, local trip and a non-uniform day for any part of that day spent in the Academy.
In Years 7-10 there are also individual prizes each term for students who have no behaviour concerns in one term.
Students should be reminded of the incentives frequently and encouraged to avoid behaviour which may result in them being given a C3 detention.
Attitude and Achievement Awards are given twice a year.
100% attendance is rewarded at the end of every term with a prize and certificate for their progress file. In addition, the highest attending form are given a prize on a weekly basis.
We have zero-tolerance of bullying. Bullying may be verbal, physical, or via electronic communication and will not be tolerated in the Academy in any form whatsoever. If you are a victim of bullying, or if you observe incidents happening to others, do not hesitate to inform a member of staff. Remember our student charter.
Bullying: A Charter of Student Rights
As a member of The Mirfield Free Grammar, you have the right:
- to live your life in peace and safety;
- to be an individual and be proud of being different;
- not to be bullied;
- to say 'no' firmly to anything you think is wrong;
- to protect yourself by ignoring others or by walking away;
- to tell a member of staff, if someone is making you unhappy
Bullying: A Charter of Student Responsibilities
As a member of The Mirfield Free Grammar, the Academy expects you:
- not to put up with any form of bullying;
- to work with others to stop bullying;
- to inform a member of staff of any form of bullying;
- not to be afraid of reporting any incidents. If you do nothing, it might suggest that you are supporting the bullying;
- not to put up with bullies in your group of friends.
Cyberbullying can kill. Cyberbullying is posting or discussing things about other people online which causes upset. You are cyberbullying even if you are just
'watching' conversations and letting it happen. Remember:
- Cyberbullying is a criminal offence.
- Anything you post on the Internet can be found by the Police, even if you think only friends will see it.
- Any comments or pictures you post needs to be considered as public. Would you show your family, friends or teachers everything you post online?
- Think before you post- if you wouldn't say something to a person's face, don't say it online.
- Think - is what you are reading true? Would that person say that? Are you sure you know who you are speaking to?
- Cyberbullying can cause intense suffering. Be responsible and think about other people's feelings.
- If posting something will make a person feel unhappy, then don't do it. It's not the way we go about relationships at The MFG and anywhere else!
The Academy is fully committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people. Parents can feel confident that careful procedures are in place to ensure that all staff and volunteers are suitable to work with children within the Academy. Consistent and effective safeguarding procedures are in place to support families, children and staff. The Academy encourages parents and children to talk freely about any concerns or worries which may affect their wellbeing. It is important to us that parents and students see the Academy as a safe place.
All concerns are referred to the members of staff who are our trained designated Safeguarding Officers. This is compliance with the 'sharing of information' guidance. Students may be referred for additional bespoke support from external agencies who work closely with the Academy. The Academy will endeavour to work in partnership with parents at all times; however, staff cannot guarantee to consult parents or to keep children's concerns confidential. In the first instance we will consult with the relevant agencies in order to safeguard the child's welfare.
