Marvelous March for The MFG

It has been an exciting 4 weeks for sports students at The MFG, culminating in 7 teams represented in 7 cup finals within the space of 4 days. It all kicked off at the start of March with the Year 7 girls becoming joint winners in the Kirklees Hockey Tournament. This was quickly followed by the Year 10 girls who were narrowly beaten into second place in the Spen Valley Netball Tournament.

These successes proved to be the springboard for a run of superb results with 6 out of 7 football teams and the Year 9 rugby team winning semi-final matches. This resulted in 5 teams progressing to the Spen Valley Football Finals, and 2 teams progressing to the West Yorkshire Football Final and Yorkshire Rugby League Final respectively. All the finals were close games. In the Year 7 football final The MFG won 5-1 against a composed Whitcliffe Mount team.

However their success could not be emulated by the Year 8 footballers who were beaten 2-0 by a very strong Heckmondwike Grammar School. Fortunately we were able to use that result to avoid further defeat on the day, winning the Year 9 final 5-1 against Upper Batley High School, the Year 10 final 3-1 (aet) and  the U16 girls' final 4-0,  both against Heckmondwike Grammar School. We were hoping to take the momentum from the Spen Valley Finals morning into the two remaining finals, however it was not to be as, after some tremendous play the Year 9 rugby team were beaten 26-16 and the Sixth Form football team were beaten 1-0; both by very strong Brooksbank School squads.

In addition to the on-field success Jodie was also crowned the Joint U19 Elite Champion 2017 at the British Schools Trampolining Championship and Emily came a very respectable 7th in the Aiglon Cup, the UK National Ski Championships in Switzerland. Overall it has been a tremendous achievement for the students at The MFG; all finals were of an extremely high standard and the grit and determination, resilience and sportsmanship shown by The MFG students was exemplary; they were a credit to themselves and the Academy.
