The MFG Ski Team hit the Austrian Slopes

On 16 February, 61 students and staff set off for the Austrian ski slopes; The MFG Ski Team adventures began. It was a fabulous week with a magnificent group of students who were a credit to The MFG both on and off the ski slopes. Resilience, striving for accuracy and fun is what it was all about #‘Grit+Persistence creates success

You can see and read all of our daily experiences, over the 7 days, on Twitter @mirfieldfree

We have collated some of the students’ thoughts on the trip to share the truly fantastic experience they had:

“Before the ski trip I was quite nervous because I did not think I would be very good. On the first day on the slopes I did not feel very confident; I found it hard to turn left, or right, and also to actually stay upright. On the second day my instructor took us to the top of the mountain on the gondola and I was really worried as the slopes looked so steep. I definitely did not feel confident to ski down them. The fear suddenly kicked in and I got upset, as I felt I could not do it. I now know ‘FEAR’, as Miss Sharpe says, is ‘False Evidence Appearing Real’, as after we had a conversation in our group about just ‘going for it’ and ‘trying our best’ we had the most exhilarating experience and one I will never forget. We actually skied down what I have perceived to be a HUGE steep slope with confidence.”

“Before I went skiing I was really scared, the mountains looked really big and steep. When I went down the mountain for the first time, however, it was the BEST feeling in the world! Words cannot describe it. I also really enjoyed making new friends, these are friendships that will last a lifetime.”

“It is the best thing I have ever done. I now feel more confident in myself and I also made lots of new friends from other year groups.”

“Before the first day on the slopes I was scared, but on the first day the instructors made us feel safe. I did not know whether I would be in a group where everyone was better than me (or should I say I felt they were better than me), but I soon realised that I could do it and that I was being challenged but not left behind.”

“The 27 hour coach journey was worth it as the trip was brilliant and on a better note, I have learned a new skill and I can now say I can ski.”

“Learning to ski was a once in a lifetime experience. I went from not knowing how to ski at all, to skiing down blue runs with confidence. The laughs along the way were an added bonus!”

“Although I had skied before, I was still terrified as it was a new resort and the runs were so different to my prior experiences. I soon, however, applied my skills to the new slopes and after the second day the skiing experience was AMAZING and I loved it!”

“Overall the ski trip was a wonderful experience, the instructors and the teachers were great; I would definitely go again.”

“At first I thought it would be really scary and I would always fall over. As the week progressed I became more confident and really enjoyed it.”

“I was quite nervous before the trip as I had never skied before. When I got on the slopes, I started to feel more confident. I learned new skills and techniques on the ski slopes during the week and enjoyed every minute of it. I made new friends and the instructors were very patient and understanding; they helped me to improve and gain confidence”.
