UKMT Senior Maths Challenge Competition
The MFG was represented on the evening of Thursday 10 November in the annual regional United Kingdom Mathematics Trust (UKMT) Senior Mathematics Challenge held at the University of Leeds in the Grand Hall. All teams were competing in a three-round competition to see who could score the most points. Starting with a group round, the mixed pairs of Year 12s and Year 13s pitted their wits against other teams to solve the 10 problems within the given time frame. They then went on to complete the cross number (very like a crossword, but all the answers are numerical and the clues are mathematical in nature). One pair had the across clues and the other had the down clues and they could only communicate through the answer sheet! Our teams did particularly well on this round! The last round was a shuttle round where the first pair completed a question, the answer to which the second pair needed in order to answer their question, and so on.
The UKMT in conjunction with the Further Maths Support Programme (FMSP) run similar events up and down the country for like-minded mathematicians amongst other competitions - check their website out for further details of competitions you may be able to take part in!
We thank the students for giving up their evening to participate in this evening event and for being such superb ambassadors for the Academy. Although they didn't place in the top three, we are extremely proud that they each tried their best and hope that they enjoyed the problem solving and competitive aspect of the event. Well Done Alex, Lizzie, Amy and Henry.
