Year 11 Work Experience
During our first half term, 225 Year 11 students took part in one week of Work Experience. This gave them the opportunity to get a taste of life in the world of work; for many students it helped them to formulate their ideas for future careers. Placements this year have been very varied and have ranged from ‘The Alhambra Palace Theatre’ (Bradford) to ‘Thomas Broadbent & Son Engineering’ in Huddersfield to ‘Haigh’s Solicitors’ in Mirfield plus many more varied and exciting opportunities. As always we have received some phenomenal feedback from employers and in several instances students have been offered part time jobs as a result of their positive attitude towards their placement.
To help prepare the students, we invited our local business partner, Ramsden’s Solicitors to come in to school and present an assembly which included information from an employer’s perspective on: why work experience is important, key “soft” skills, road testing a career, adding to your CV, what employers expect and things to avoid whilst on placement.
Feedback on the whole work experience programme from the students was excellent, with many rating the experience 10/10. Alysia, who worked in a hairdressers, said that she enjoyed “ having my own responsibilities and learning new skills relevant to the job” and Alfie, who worked at the Huddersfield Community Trust in the Football department said that he enjoyed “meeting and talking to new people and also enjoyed travelling around to different schools”.
The students’ advice to future students going through the process included, “find your own placement as this will help you enjoy it more” – “ask questions, get involved” – “use your initiative and ask colleagues for jobs” – “give it a chance and make the most of it”.
The Think Futures Team are now looking forward to starting the Work Experience process with the next set of students.
