Examples of Clubs & Activities 2022-2023

The MFG has an extra-curricular programme that is rich, varied and diverse. All students are encouraged to take part in extra-curricular activities and for those with the ability there is the opportunity to achieve excellence.

Sport

Our extensive extra-curricular programme takes full advantage of our superb facilities which include: an all-weather synthetic turf pitch, extensive fields, hard court netball/tennis courts, 2 sports halls, state of the art dance studio and fitness suite. All students have regular access to activities that run before and after school and participation rates are high. Our sports teams are the envy of most schools. We have hockey, netball, football, rugby league, rounders, cricket, athletics and basketball teams and every year a selection of students are chosen for Regional and County Representative Honours. The teams often dominate local competitions in all sports and reach the last rounds of many Regional and National competitions.

We also offer trampolining, badminton and dance clubs at The MFG and students have the opportunity to display their performances both in school and at events outside school. Our Sports Leadership Academy is well established and our students help coach at clubs both in school and in our primary feeder schools as well as assisting with the organisation of a variety of sports festivals.

In addition the PE department organise regular trips within and outside the UK, focusing on team building, skiing and football tours.

Performing Arts/Music

The Drama Department goes from strength to strength, making full use of The Studio Theatre, Thorburn Hall and The Green Room, to create exciting, entertaining and innovative work across all year groups.

The Performing Arts Department have a reputation for staging outstanding productions. These have included 'The Addams Family', 'Lord of the Flies', 'Bugsy Malone', 'Grease', 'We Will Rock You', 'Little Shop of Horrors' and 'The Wiz'. Our most recent school show was 'Guys and Dolls' which received sensational reviews and showcased the incredible talents of 62 students ranging from Year 7 to Year 13.

The Studio Theatre is a great platform for the students at The MFG and is also a fantastic venue for visiting companies like world renowned devising company 'Frantic Assembly' who have been thrilled to welcome to work with our KS4 & KS5 students.

Drama students have continued to enhance their studies through a variety of theatre visits. In the past year students have experienced The National Theatre's 'The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time', 'Hamlet', Kneehigh’s ‘946: The Amazing Story of Adolphus Tipson’ and Stephen Sondheim’s ‘Into the Woods’. Students have also enjoyed Frantic Assembly's 'Beautiful Burnout', Kneehigh's 'Steptoe & Son' and 'Tristan & Yseult', 'One Man Two Guvnors', 'Sweeney Todd', 'Spring Awakening', 'Romeo & Juliet' and 'Twelfth Night' at venues such as the West Yorkshire Playhouse, Leeds Grand, the Lawrence Batley Theatre and The Crucible.

In addition, the ever popular Drama Club runs each week for Year 7 and Year 8 students.

The Music department has a strong team of 2 full time music staff and 8 visiting peripatetic teachers.  It is now housed in brand new purpose built facilities consisting of 2 large music classrooms and 6 practice rooms.  After school each day the department is a hub of activity with extra-curricular groups and individual students who wish to practice.

We have an orchestra, a soul band, 2 rock schools, several rock bands, a choir and a brass ensemble. The ensembles have performed at a huge number of school events including the Remembrance Parade in Mirfield, the annual Christmas concert at the House of the Resurrection, North Kirklees Showcase in Dewsbury Town Hall and the MFG "Outstanding 100" evening.

Each year the department collaborates with Drama to co-produce a large scale musical production and the pit orchestra is made up entirely from our own students at the MFG.

Our rock bands have entered the Kirklees "Battle of the bands" competition for the past 2 years and the first year it was won by MFG band Liberate and again this year by MFG band Starworks.

Information Communication Technology

The ICT suites are accessible for students from all year groups and can be booked after school until 4.30 pm each evening. Students are encouraged to use the school’s ICT facilities for research and coursework.

Learning Resource Centre (LRC)

Students are able to use the LRC at break, at lunchtime and after school to support their learning. Resources, including ICT and the support of a qualified librarian can be accessed to improve independent learning. The LRC is also home to our ThinkFutures Resource Centre, a dedicated careers information room, where careers advice and guidance sessions take place.

Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme

Students in Years 9 to 13 can access the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme.

We have several groups working at Bronze level each year, doing 2 day expeditions locally. We usually have Silver groups doing expeditions in The Yorkshire Dales and The Peak District and also a Gold group who do their expeditions in The Lake District.

All students complete activities in three other sections both in and out of school. These activities include a wide range of sports, cookery, music, dance, drama and assisting with after school clubs and at charity shops.

We also run additional mountaineering weekends in Snowdonia and Scotland.

Careers/Work Experience

A comprehensive programme of careers education is delivered through our personal and social education programmes, tutorial programmes and our many careers activities ensure students are given independent, impartial and up-to-date careers information. Advice and guidance is available at all stages of a student’s career but particularly when choosing subject Options in year 9, preparing for Year 11 Work Experience and Options at 16 and 18.

We have developed a Careers Information Portal www.Thinkfutures.net and host numerous events annually, which are open to all students from year 7-13, including a large careers convention, mini events information events, career spotlight sessions and, FE and HE information visits and employer events. We work with the Entice Project to enhance our students’ opportunities in securing local apprenticeships with local employers and are able to offer all our year 11 students a mock interview.
